Some design tips when using Canva

1) Be sure to select the correct size artwork.  Always double-check the dimensions of your selection before you start.

2) If you chose one of Canva's templates, you can resize it (if necessary) by clicking Resize, then selecting custom Size from the list.

2) Be sure to include bleed in your artwork.  Bleed is the extra space along the edges that get trimmed after printing.  Bleed ensures that there are no random white spaces on the edge of your artwork.  Once you have added the bleed to your artwork, be sure that the images and background extend to the bleed edges.

3) Be sure to save your artwork as a PDF Print with marks and bleeds.  This will save the artwork with the extra bleed area and the image quality will be best for printing.  For best results, select CMYK in the Color Profile list.  It is recommended that Flatten PDF is not selected so adjustments can still be made to the final PDF.

Margins in Canva

You can adjust the margins in a Canva document, though the process is a bit manual. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Use Rulers and Guides: Enable the rulers and guides by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Show rulers" and "Show guides." You can then drag guides from the rulers to create margin boundaries.

  2. Adjust Text Boxes and Elements: Manually resize and position your text boxes, images, and other elements within the margins you set using the guides. This helps keep everything aligned and consistent.

  3. Templates with Margins: If you need precise margins, you can create a template with margin guides in another tool (like a PDF editor) and upload it as a background in Canva. Then, arrange your content within those margins.

  4. Grid and Positioning: Use Canva’s grid and positioning tools to align elements consistently. This can help maintain a uniform margin throughout your document.

While Canva doesn’t have a built-in margin tool like some traditional word processors, these methods can help you achieve the same result.

Below is a sample margin setup using custom guides.  It is for a 5x7" template.  Your actual settings will vary, based on the size of your artwork.

Select Add Guides, then choose Custom as shown in the image.  Set the Columns and Rows to 1, then set the gap to the document size (8.5x11, 3.5x2, etc), Set the Margin to 0.125.  This will create a document with 0.125" margins.  Keep all text and important information inside of the margins to ensure it does not get trimmed off during the print process.
